Krista van der Niet - Untitled, 2009
Op Art Amsterdam presenteert Liefhertje en De Grote Witte Reus drie talentvolle fotografen die zich in de afgelopen tijd sterk hebben geprofileerd. Het werk van Krista van der Niet, Marleen Sleeuwits en Isabella Rozendaal prijkt vijf dagen lang aan de wanden van stand 135.
Ook toont LhGWR in twee ladenkasten werk van zeven kunstenaars; Sarah Carlier, Alexandra Crouwers, Johan Gustavsson, Christian Kryl, Natascha Libbert, Marsel Loermans en Nadine Stijns.
Het werk van Marleen Sleeuwits (1980, NL – Woont en werkt in Den Haag) kenmerkt zich door de schizofrene beelden die zowel een magische schoonheid als beklemming communiceren. De stedelijke omgeving, de ruimtes en plekken die zij portretteert lijken onuitgesproken, ruimtes die ons door de functieloosheid niet opvallen en plekken die door hun hermetische karakter onbereikbaar zijn. Door deze ruimtes van een gezicht te voorzien confronteert Sleeuwits haar publiek met de schoonheid van het alledaagse, maar wijst tegelijkertijd op de zorgvuldig geformuleerde ontwerpconcepten die voor deze ruimtes zijn gemaakt. Ze verhaalt daardoor met veel overtuigingskracht over onze selectiviteit en het onvermogen om onze ogen te openen voor het alledaagse en wijst tegelijkertijd, middels haar esthetische lichtwerking en kleuren, op de beklemmende notie dat achter alles een gedachte schuil gaat.
De sculpturen die Krista van der Niet (1978, NL – Woont en werkt in Amsterdam) in haar studio assembleert zijn, in de foto's die ze daar vervolgens van maakt, omgeven met een oase van rust. Als foto worden deze sculpturen heldere hedendaagse stillevens die bijna schilderachtig aandoen. Van der Niet gebruikt de mogelijkheden van het traditionele stilleven en voegt daar haar eigen onderzoek aan toe om eigentijdse vragen te stellen. Doordat ze je als toeschouwer van een eenduidige betekenis onthoudt laat ze je associëren en gebruikt ze de ruimte in haar werk om je vast te houden in het beeld.
Ondanks de vriendelijke, humoristische en uitgesproken esthetische benadering weet ze je terloops mee te nemen in een licht kritisch spanningsveld dat je in al haar werken terugvindt.
Isabella Rozendaal (1983, NL – Woont en werkt in Amsterdam) laat zich voor haar werk, door middel van uitgebreid onderzoek, onderdompelen in subculturen met morbide fascinaties en weet met opvallend gemak de essentie van deze fascinaties bloot te leggen. Keer op keer legt ze paradoxale momenten vast waarop tederheid en naargeestigheid samenvallen. Hierdoor word je als toeschouwer aangesproken op je eigen morbiditeit en wordt je gevoel voor esthetiek tot het maximum opgerekt. Haar brede fotografische oriëntatie en de projectmatige benadering van haar werk zorgen ervoor dat de vele hokjes waarin haar werk past nooit lang beklijven. Ze weet de taalelementen uit verschillende fotografische genres eenvoudig door elkaar te gebruiken, waardoor een eigen hokje het enige passende lijkt te zijn.

At Art Amsterdam Liefhertje en De Grote Witte Reus presents three talented photographers who have manifested themselves very active lately. The artwork of Krista van der Niet, Marleen Sleeuwits and Isabella Rozendaal will decorate the walls at stand 135.
LhGWR also presents two drawers with the work of seven other artists: Sarah Carlier, Alexandra Crouwers, Johan Gustavsson, Christian Kryl, Natascha Libbert, Marsel Loermans and Nadine Stijns.
The work of Marleen Sleeuwits (1980, NL – Lives and works in The Hague) characterizes itself by schizophrenic scenes that radiate both magical beauty and suffocation. The urban environment, the surroundings and areas that she portraits seem unspoken of, areas that do not attract any attention because of their lack of function and unreachableness through its closed character. By giving these spaces a function, Sleeuwits confronts her audience with their common beauty but also puts an emphasis on the carefully formulated design concepts that are created for these areas. In doing so with persuasiveness she confronts us with our selectivity and our incapability to open our eyes for the ordinary. Through her aesthetic use of light and color she also points out the oppressive notion that behind everything shelters a thought.
The sculptures that Krista van der Niet (1978, NL – lives and works in Amsterdam) assembles in her studio and photographs afterwards, find themselves portrayed in an oasis of tranquility. As pictures the sculptures are vivid modern still lives that look almost picturesque. Van der Niet uses the possibilities of the traditional still life and adds her own imagination in order to ask contemporary questions. By deriving the viewer of a conclusive image, she encourages you to associate and uses this to keep your attention on her art work.
Despite the friendly, humorous and distinct esthetic approach she casually guides you with a slight critical tension that you find in all her work.
Isabella Rozendaal (1983, NL – lives and works in Amsterdam) does extensive research for her work by dunking into subcultures with morbid fascinations. With an astonishing ease she unearths the essence of these fascinations. Time after time she captures paradoxal moments in which tenderness and morbidity entwine.
As a spectator you are confronted with your own morbidity and your feeling of aesthetic is stretched to a maximum. Her broad photographic orientation and the project-based approach ensure that the labels the art critics want to put on her work have no long existence. Her skill to mix elements from different photographic genres is so unique that it can only be labeled as ‘Isabella Rozendaal’.
