Het boek ‘Miniscule Blue Helmets on a Massive Quest’ van Pierre Derks brengt de wereldwijde interventie in beeld van 50.000 plastic speelgoedsoldaatjes met een blauwe, handgeschilderde, helm baret of hoed. Dit gebeurt door een selectie van 500 foto's van de mini Blauwhelmen op locaties in meer dan 60 landen. Daarnaast deelt een internationaal spectrum aan experts in het boek hun reflectie op, en kennis over het project en de gelieerde thematiek.
Het boek bevat (Engelstalige) tekstbijdragen van: Susan Manuel, Roger Stahl, Jonathan Vickery, Patrick M. Regan, Jos Morren, Linda Polman, Matt Groff, Christ Klep en Damon Stanek.
Luxemburg
De massale aanwezigheid van de Miniscule Blue Helmets in de publieke ruimte zorgt ervoor dat iedereen en overal in het vizier kan komen te staan van een zwaarbewapende Blauwhelm. De confrontatie met de kleine variant verschilt van de encounter met een levensgrote VN Blauwhelm maar roept volgens Derks wel dezelfde vragen en gevoelens op over hun aanwezigheid, betekenis en functioneren. Het open karakter van het project biedt tegelijkertijd ruimte aan eigen interpretatie, hetgeen geleid heeft tot de bijzondere resultaten en gelaagdheid van het werk.
Mong La
Een voorbeeld hiervan is de adoptie van het project door Nederlandse Blauwhelm veteranen die in de jaren zeventig en tachtig voor de VN in Libanon dienden. Jos Morren (Bond van Nederlandse Militaire- en Oorlogsslachtoffers): “Frank kocht zelf tweeduizend van die groene poppetjes en schilderde ook zelf de helmpjes blauw, om ze vervolgens altijd bij zich te hebben en op tactische plaatsen achter te laten. (...) Eric deed het kalmer aan, maar had voortaan een onafscheidelijk maatje aan zijn Miniscule Blue Helmet. Heel handig, want als je door een psychische blokkade de draad van het verhaal kwijtraakt, zet je gewoon je maatje op tafel. Erg effectieve communicatie in zo’n geval. Deze jongens hadden zowaar een gezonde, creatieve vorm van zelfmedicatie in handen gekregen, met het kunstwerk van Pierre Derks.”

De oproep om de interventie te fotograferen en de beelden voorzien van ‘geotag’ te uploaden naar www.minibluehelmets.com heeft geresulteerd in een gevulde wereldkaart die de aanwezigheid in meer dan 60 landen monitort. Een selectie van 500 foto's is (in specifieke volgorde) terug te vinden in het boek.
Centre Pompidou
De iconische kwaliteit van de Miniscule Blue Helmet triggert het debat en de beeldvorming omtrent de grotere gerelateerde onderwerpen. Het boek hoopt een volgende encounter met een Blauwhelm te verrijken.
Grand Canyon
De publicatie is mogelijk gemaakt door de steun van het Fonds BKVB (Fonds voor Beeldende Kunsten, Vormgeving en Bouwkunst). Het project is tot stand gekomen door de medewerking van LhGWR en het TodaysArt Festival.

The book ‘Miniscule Blue Helmets on a Massive Quest’ by Pierre Derks shows the worldwide intervention of 50,000 plastic toy soldiers with blue hand-painted helmet, beret or hat by means of 500 selected photo's of the mini Blue Helmets on locations in more than 60 countries. An international spectrum of specialists shares in the book their reflections on the project and their expertise on topics that are related.
The book contains text contributions (written in English) by: Susan Manuel, Roger Stahl, Jonathan Vickery, Patrick M. Regan, Jos Morren, Linda Polman, Matt Groff, Christ Klep en Damon Stanek.
The mass manifestation of the Miniscule Blue Helmets in public space implies that the potential of getting confronted with a heavily armed blue helmeted soldier is within reach of a global audience. Although it is obvious that the encounter is rather different from running into a real-life UN Blue Helmet, it might just trigger the same questions and feelings about their presence and deployment. The open nature of the project has led to a fascinating variety of outcomes that contributed to the layered meaning.
An example is the adoption of the project by Dutch Blue Helmet veterans who took part in the UN mission in Lebanon (70's / 80's). Jos Morren (Association of dutch military war and service victims): “Frank bought 2,000 of those little green men and painted the helmets blue himself, constantly carrying them with him and leaving them in tactical spots. (...) Eric took it more slow, but became inseparable from his one Miniscule Blue Helmet. Very handy, because if you lose touch with the world because of a psychological blockade, you just put your little buddy on the table. Very effective in such a situation. Out of the blue, those boys were suddenly given a healthy, creative form of self medication, through the art of Derks.”
The call for photographing the intervention and uploading the image with a ‘geotag’ on www.minibluehelmets.com resulted in a filled world map that monitors the presence in more than 60 countries. A selection of 500 of these uploads can be found (in specific order) in the book.
The iconic quality of the Miniscule Blue Helmet instantly give rise to responses and debate about relevant, related issues. The book will hopefully contribute to enrich your encounter with a Blue Helmet.
The publication is made possible with the support of Fonds BKVB (The Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture). The project expanded in collaboration with LhGWR and the TodaysArt Festival.
