LhGWR opent het nieuwe seizoen met twee zeer succesvolle tekenaars die beiden een voorliefde hebben voor handwerk en een rauwe en confronterende beeldtaal hanteren: Martyn F. Overweel en Gijs Kast. Als illustrators voor onder andere Volkskrant Magazine, Hollands Diep, Psy, Winq en Men’s Health zijn Overweel en Kast dag in dag uit bezig met de ontwikkelingen in onze maatschappij. Ze zijn de connaisseurs van beurse plekken in onze samenleving en weten deze met hun humoristische tekeningen van pijnlijke situaties en portretten keer op keer kenbaar te maken.
Martyn F. Overweel (NL, 1971) houdt ervan om met zijn situatieschetsen hier en daar plaatsvervangende schaamte op te roepen. Wat bloot kan worden gelegd, wordt ook letterlijk bloot gelegd. In zijn werk wordt schijnbaar zonder opinie het menselijk onvermogen omarmd. An sich voert in de archetypische belevingswereld van Overweel lichtvoetigheid de boventoon. Hij vindt echter de vertaalslagen van zijn onderwerpen in extremen en refereert met veel overtuiging aan het nazitijdperk, de extravagante zijde van de homocultuur of het absurdisme van onze welvaartsmaatschappij. Hierdoor wordt het alledaagse op pijnlijke wijze gerelativeerd.
De portretten van Gijs Kast (NL, 1983) zijn ontdaan van iedere vorm van verheerlijking. Dit levert een confronterende weergave op, die de menselijkheid van de geportretteerde benadrukt. Kast laat zien wat normaliter wordt verhuld en gebruikt zijn humor om de pijnlijke kant van de onthulling 'draaglijk' te maken. Kast haalt het venijn in je naar boven en gunt je het plezier van een sarcastische blik. Het is dan ook niet moeilijk om je te verhouden tot zijn werk.

LhGWR starts the new season with two highly successful artists that share a passion for craftsmanship and both make use of raw and confronting imaging in their drawings: Martyn F. Overweel and Gijs Kast. As illustrators Overweel and Kast work with the developments in our society on a daily basis. They are the 'connaisseurs' of the painful and awkward situations in our lives and present them in their humorous drawings.
Martyn F. Overweel (NL, 1971) loves to evoke a sense of shame with his situational sketches. What can be exposed will be exposed. In his work the human incapacity is embrased without apparent opinion. To the viewer it is obvious that in the archetypical world of Overweel frivolity prevails. However, Overweel finds the transformation of his subjects into extremes and refers with great conviction to the Nazi era, the extravagant side of gay culture and the absurdity of our thriving society. This mounts into a painfully mundane perspective.
Gijs Kast's portraits are stripped from any form of aesthestic. The images offer a direct and confronting reflection that underlines the humanity of the portraited. Kast showes what normally is hidden and uses his humor to make the painful experience of this exposure bearable. Kast reveals the venom within you and offers you the pleasure of a sarcastic peep. It is therefore not hard to tune in to his work.
